Expanse -- Reshaping the Sedentary Inflight Experience

“Sitting is the new smoking” has become a popular phrase to describe the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle. Previous research has shown that prolonged sitting can cause irreversible damage to the human body, including more than thirty types of chronic illnesses and acute medical issues, such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Standing up to walk around and take breaks during long hours of sitting is one way to mitigate these health problems. However, in some cases this is not possible—the long haul flight in an economy seat requires passengers to remain seated for many hours. 

To address this problem, I researched and designed an economy passenger seating system aimed at effectively decrease the risk of DVT and reducing the overall negative impacts of sedentary air travels. The concept was developed in consultation with faculty in the UW School of Nursing. An important part of my process was the construction of full-scale prototypes to refine the ergonomic details of the seat. The design aligns with related Federal Aviation Regulation guidelines, engineering constraints, and the airline’s concern for a feasible concept. The result is an asymmetrical seat design that increases the space for body movements, while integrating a reminder system to encourage mobility.

The project EXPANSE was exhibited at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle for one month, beginning on June 15th, 2015.

Expanse received positive feedback from audiences of different backgrounds and professions. Many people asked about when this seat would be adopted by airlines. The feedback I received validated the potential market value of this concept and also continues to motivate me to bring this idea to reality.

Air pollution is commonly perceived to be an outdoor problem, and a very visible one. But what we don't realize is that the most harmful toxins are actually indoor and invisible.

Verdis is a bioengineered plant system that acts as the canary in the coal mine for detecting indoor air pollutants. It is backed up by modern science, and it taps into the existing natural symbiotic relationships between plants and people, a timeless bond that will never fade.

This is a way finding exhibition design for an international meeting. The goal of this design is to provide an universally understandable visual cue for the international attendants, so they can navigate themselves around the UW business school area even if they do not read English.

In emergency, knowing of patient’s blood type can make all the different. However, the current blood type analysis is very time consuming. This device aims to reduce the time of blood type analysis from hours to seconds. It's a collaboration project with the University of Washington Department of Bioengineering.
